Short answer: Clean wheels before the rest of the car so any overspray doesn't land on bodywork you've already washed. Work through: pre-rinse → wheel cleaner → agitate with a brush → rinse thoroughly → iron fallout treatment. Use a dedicated wheel brush to reach the barrel and around spokes — a flat cloth can't do the job properly.

Cleaning alloy wheels properly takes more than a quick rinse. Brake dust, road grime, and iron fallout bond to wheel surfaces fast — particularly around spokes, inside barrel areas, and around brake callipers. Left untreated, contamination causes staining, pitting, and long-term damage to wheel finishes. A proper clean removes all of this without scratching or damaging the alloy.

What do you need to clean alloy wheels properly?

For a thorough wheel clean you need:

  • A dedicated wheel cleaner, preferably acid-free
  • A wheel woolie or spoke brush for reaching inside barrels and around spokes
  • A softer detailing brush for painted or polished faces and delicate finishes
  • An iron fallout remover for treating bonded brake dust contamination
  • A pressure washer or strong hose for rinsing
  • A separate bucket and wash mitt if cleaning the wheel face by hand

Using a separate bucket for wheels is important. Wheel cleaning generates dirty water and debris that you do not want on a mitt also being used on paintwork. Keep the wheel cleaning process entirely separate from the car wash stage.

How do you clean alloy wheels step by step?

Wheels should be cleaned before or at the very start of the car wash process. Working the wheels first means any overspray, dirty water, and grime dislodged from the barrels doesn't splash onto bodywork you've already cleaned.

Pre-rinse
Rinse each wheel thoroughly with a pressure washer or strong hose to remove loose brake dust, dirt, and grit before any product goes on. This reduces the amount of abrasive material being moved around during agitation and makes the cleaner more effective. Pay particular attention to the inside of the barrel and the gap between the spoke and the wheel face.

Apply wheel cleaner
Spray Axis Acid Free Wheel Cleaner generously over the entire wheel, including the tyre sidewall, spokes, and any visible barrel area. Allow the product to dwell for two to three minutes. A quality wheel cleaner starts breaking down brake dust and road grime on contact. Do not allow it to dry on the wheel, particularly in warm or sunny conditions.

Agitate with a wheel brush
Use a wheel brush to work the cleaner into the spokes, around the brake calliper, and deep into the barrel. A long-handled woolie brush is ideal for reaching inside the barrel without contact with the calliper. For the wheel face and delicate spoke areas on polished or gloss-painted wheels, use a softer detailing brush to avoid scratching. Work methodically around each wheel. Wheel cleaner alone shifts a lot of grime, but brake dust that's been building for weeks needs physical agitation to dislodge from tight areas.

Rinse thoroughly
Rinse each wheel completely from top to bottom with a pressure washer. Flush the inside of the barrel as thoroughly as the outside. Make sure no product residue remains in recesses or around the tyre bead. If the wheels are particularly dirty, repeat steps 2 to 4 before moving on.

Iron fallout treatment
For a deeper clean — particularly if you haven't treated the wheels for some time — apply Toxin Iron Fallout Remover after the main wash. Spray over the clean, wet wheel and allow two to four minutes dwell time. The product will turn purple where it reacts with ferrous brake dust particles. Rinse away. This step removes the contamination that wheel cleaner alone cannot shift.

How often should you clean alloy wheels?

Every one to two weeks for most cars driven regularly. Wheels accumulate brake dust and road grime faster than any other part of the car, and the longer contamination is left, the harder it becomes to remove without heavy agitation or repeated treatment.

Iron fallout treatment with Toxin is worth doing every one to two months rather than every wash. It takes only a few minutes and removes the invisible layer of ferrous contamination that builds up between regular cleans. If you notice the wheels looking dull or feeling rough even after cleaning, iron fallout is usually the reason.

What should you avoid when cleaning alloy wheels?

Avoid acid-based wheel cleaners on sensitive finishes

Acid wheel cleaners work fast but are not safe on all wheel types. Polished, bare aluminium, and some powder-coated finishes can be damaged by acidic products. An acid-free wheel cleaner like Axis is safe across all wheel types, removing the need to check compatibility each time.

Do not clean wheels when they are hot

Wheels heated by braking hold heat for longer than they may appear to. Applying wheel cleaner to a hot surface causes it to dry before it can work effectively, leaving residue that is difficult to remove. Allow wheels to cool for at least 20 to 30 minutes after driving before cleaning.

Do not use the same mitt you use on paintwork

Wheel cleaning generates heavily contaminated water and deposits grit onto your cleaning tools. Using that same mitt or sponge on the car body afterwards transfers grit directly onto the paintwork and causes scratching. Keep your wheel cleaning tools entirely separate.

Do not skip the rinse

Wheel cleaner left on a surface — even an acid-free formula — can leave residue marks if it dries. Always rinse completely and do not move on to the next wheel before rinsing the one you have just treated.

Is acid-free wheel cleaner as effective as acid-based?
For most regular cleaning, yes. Acid-based cleaners work faster on heavily neglected wheels but come with the risk of damaging sensitive finishes and require careful rinsing. An acid-free cleaner used regularly and allowed proper dwell time achieves the same result safely across all wheel types, including polished, painted, and powder-coated alloys.
Do I need a separate wheel brush or can I use a regular cloth?
A dedicated wheel brush is significantly more effective. The inside of a wheel barrel, the backs of spokes, and the area around the brake calliper cannot be reached with a flat cloth. A long-handled woolie brush reaches these areas without contact with the calliper and lifts grime from textured surfaces far more effectively than wiping alone.
Why do my wheels still look dull after cleaning?
Iron fallout is almost certainly the cause. Brake dust embeds in the wheel surface and cannot be removed by a regular wheel cleaner. An iron fallout remover is needed to dissolve the bond chemically. Apply Toxin to clean, wet wheels, allow it to dwell until you see the purple colour reaction, then rinse. One treatment typically makes a noticeable difference.
Can I use wheel cleaner on tyre sidewalls?
Yes, spraying wheel cleaner onto the tyre during the wheel cleaning process is fine. For a deeper clean of the tyre itself, a dedicated tyre cleaner works more effectively on rubber. Always clean the tyre before applying any tyre dressing to ensure the dressing bonds correctly.
Should I apply any protection to alloy wheels after cleaning?
It's worth doing, particularly on polished or bare alloy wheels susceptible to oxidation. A ceramic wheel coating or spray sealant applied to clean, dry wheels creates a barrier that makes brake dust easier to remove at the next clean. On painted or lacquered alloys, the factory lacquer provides protection but benefits from regular maintenance cleaning to prevent contamination building up underneath.
