Why Does The Right Microfibre Matter?
Microfibre is designed to lift dirt away from a surface rather than just push it around, but that only works if the cloth is suited to the job. The wrong pile or weave can drag grit across paint, leave streaks on glass, or simply not hold enough water to dry a car properly.
Using the right microfibre for each stage helps:
- Reduce the risk of swirl marks and fine scratches from washing and drying
- Get a genuinely streak-free finish on glass and mirrors
- Keep separate cloths for separate jobs, so you're never using a wheel mitt on paintwork by mistake
Which Microfibre Do I Need?
- Drying towels — for lifting water off paintwork after a wash, without dragging grit across the surface
- Glass cloths — a tighter weave for a streak-free finish on windows and mirrors
- Wash mitts — plush pile designed to trap dirt away from the surface while you wash
- Wheel mitts — a separate, tougher mitt kept apart from your paintwork cloths, for brake dust and grime
- Interior cloths and scrubbing pads — for dashboards, trim and fabric
- Microfibre wash detergent — keeps your cloths and towels performing properly wash after wash, rather than clogging with old product and grit
Microfibre FAQs
Everything you need to know about choosing and caring for your microfibre cloths and towels.
Why do I need different cloths for different jobs?
Each job needs a different pile and weave. A cloth tough enough for wheels would be too abrasive for paint, and a plush drying towel wouldn't cut through glass streaks the way a dedicated glass cloth does. Keeping them separate protects your paintwork.
How do I wash my microfibre cloths?
Wash them separately from other laundry, ideally with a dedicated microfibre detergent, and avoid fabric softener — it clogs the fibres and stops them absorbing properly.
How often should I replace my microfibre towels?
With proper care, good-quality microfibre can last years. Replace anything that's become stiff, thin, or is holding onto grit even after washing, since that's a sign it's no longer doing its job safely.
Can I use the same cloth on wheels and paintwork?
No. Brake dust and grit picked up on a wheel mitt can scratch paintwork if the same cloth is used on both. Keep a dedicated wheel mitt separate from anything that touches your paint.
What's the difference between a drying towel and a general-purpose cloth?
Drying towels are built with a deeper pile to hold more water for drying a full car. General-purpose cloths are thinner and better suited to wiping down surfaces, buffing, or general cleanup.
The right cloth protects the work you've already done.
All the effort of a proper wash and dry can be undone in seconds with the wrong cloth. Keep a dedicated set for paint, glass, wheels and interior, and they'll keep your car looking right for years, not just for one wash.
