Which Wheel Brush Size Do I Need?
Reach is the thing that decides most of this. A brush that's too short won't get to the back of the barrel; one that's too long is awkward on a small wheel.
- 12 inch — small wheels, intricate spokes, calipers and tight crevices. The precision option.
- 16 inch — a good all-rounder for most family cars and hatchbacks.
- 18 inch — deep barrels, larger rims and SUV wheels, where you need to reach right through.
If you look after more than one vehicle, a bundle covering two sizes usually saves the most time.
Nylon, Wool or Polypropylene?
- Nylon — hard-wearing and easy to rinse clean. A sensible default for regular maintenance washes.
- Merino wool — soft and highly absorbent, so it holds plenty of suds. Gentle on delicate and polished finishes.
- Polypropylene — dense synthetic fibres with no metal in the core, which keeps the brush away from the wheel face while you work.
Whatever the material, rinse the brush out as you move between wheels. Grit carried from one wheel to the next is what causes marks, not the bristles themselves.
